NIGHTLIFE
A thriving university town that contains a symphony orchestra, theatres, cabarets and wine
bars ensures that there is something to suit all tastes and budgets. For opera and ballet, try
the Opéra du Rhin, 19 place Broglie (tel. 03-88-75-48-01); tickets range from 11euro to 53euro.
The Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg gives concerts at the Palais de la Musique
et des Congrès, place de Bordeaux (tel. 03-88-15-09-09). Tickets cost 15euro to 21euro. The
Théâtre National de Strasbourg plays a busy schedule at 1 av. de la Marseillaise (tel. 03-
88-24-88-24). Tickets cost from 20euro to 32euro.
For the club scene, head to the streets surrounding place de la Cathédrale: rue des Frères, rue
des Soeurs, and rue de la Croix. For jazz and blues, your best bets are Le Gayot, 18 rue des
Frères (tel. 03-88-36-31-88), with occasional guest performers; and the more refined though
still sultry Le Bistro Piano Bar, 30 rue des Tonneliers (tel. 03-88-23-02-71), with a jazz
piano player and free concerts Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Café des Anges, 5 rue
Ste-Catherine (tel. 03-88-37-12-67), has an underground dance floor converted from a wine
cellar as well as a ground level bar area. The dance club never has a cover. Le Seven, 25
rue des Tonneliers (tel. 03-88-32-77-77), has a below-street-level dance floor that features
all types of music but disco. The place stays packed with a stylish crowd between ages 20
and 35. Cover ranges from 8euro to 14euro. Le Blue-B, 1 rue du Miroir (tel. 03-88-22-22-23), is
in a cellar, the foundation for a historically important building near the cathedral. This disco
has a decor that's (you guessed it) blue, and a sound system that keeps the young, the
restless, and the dance-crazed coming back. It's open Wednesday through Sunday from
10pm to 4am. Entrance is free most nights except Friday and Saturday, when there's a 10euro
cover, a price that includes the first drink.
One of the biggest and most visible discos in the region lies 7km (4 1/2 miles) north of
Strasbourg. To get here, follow the signs to Wantzenau. It's Le Chalet, 376 route de
Wantzenau (tel. 03-88-31-18-31), where a 13euro cover buys the first drink and the right to
parade at will between two huge and distinctively different sections. One is designed for
techno fans, another for less harsh dance music with a good mix of some disco
classics.evening.
A particular free delight is the opportunity to stroll at night along the banks of the Ill on in
one of the many illuminated parks. The Petite France quarter and covered markers come to
life when night falls as students and visitors mingle along the medieval streets. Piano bars
and rock bars vie for a visitor's custom. A stroll to the place de la Cathédrale, may reveal
an assortment of performers and artists. All of the dances are spontaneous, extemporaneous,
and take place against the illumination of the cathedral. For a chance to see international
folk-dancing troupes, go to the Palais des Rohan around 8:30pm in summer. From mid-
July to about August 8, additional folk dances are presented within La Petite France on
Monday night in the places des Tripiers, Tuesday in the place Benjamin Zix, and
Wednesday in the place du Marché aux Chochons de Lait. Performance dates vary, so check
with the Office de Tourisme for a precise schedule.
Strasbourg is considered to be relatively safe city but of course the usual personal security
precautions are advised ie. watch your bag, try not to wander off alone and keep away from
the canals if you are the sort of person who is inspired to swim after a drink or two.
